Wednesday, June 13th – Fly Tying @ Living Waters

We have now divided our fly tying night into three distinct skill levels– Beginner, Intermediate, and Roundtable.  We eat dinner at Pok-E-Jo’s BBQ in Round Rock at 6:00 P.M. and then meet back at Living Waters at 7:00 P.M. for fly tying.

Beginners – We supply materials, tools, vises, and instruction for the Fly of the Night.

Intermediate – We provide materials and instruction for the Fly of the Night.  You bring your vise/tools.

Roundtable – You bring your own stuff and tie whatever you wish.

10:00 A.M. – Llano River Primer / Guest Presenter:  Jim Gray 

Jim Gray has fished the Llano extensively for years and gives an incredibly detailed presentation regarding access, fly selection, and river info.  If you haven’t fished the Llano River, we would consider this presentation core curriculum.  Bring a notebook and a pen as there will be plenty of knowledge to take away from this event.

Saturday, June 23rd – Living Waters’ 10th Year Anniversary Party

It been 10 years already!!!  Come join us Saturday, June 23rd for our 10th Year Anniversary as your local fly shop!  Doors open at 9:00 A.M. with Round Rock Donuts/Coffee!  There will be a special prize drawing at the close of the day as well – details below.  Chris’ dad will have the smoker going and a FREE BBQ lunch will be served at 12:00 P.M. — If you have had Chris’ dad’s BBQ before, you know it will draw a crowd so get here early!

10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY PRIZE DRAWING
Here’s the prize drawing works: Every customer that walks through our doors gets a free raffle ticket to place in the prize drawing of their choice, and for every $10 that you spend in the shop on June 23rd, you get an additional ticket to place in the drawing of your choice! Saturday, June 30th – Building Your Texas Fly Box

Event Schedule

10:00 A.M. –Matching the Hatch for the Texas Hill Country / Presenter: Matt Bennett of Fly Geek Custom Flies – www.flygeek.net
This presentation will focus on local forage and keys for incorporating feeding triggers into your flies that get fish to eat! Prey species profile, motion, camo, behavior, coloration and proper materials will all be covered. Matt will tie a selection of flies incorporating all of these elements into a final product and explain decision-making in the materials and techniques used, as well as proper fly design. While this focuses mainly on Central Texas fly fishing, its concepts are applicable just about anywhere.

2:00 P.M. – Building a Better Fly Box / Presenter:  Chris Johnson

Chris will walk you through the basics of fly selection for the Lone Star State!  He will show you how to match fly patterns by river/water type and how you can easily be prepared for almost anything!  You don’t have to own or tie all the flies in the world to have a complete box, you just need the right ones for the job at hand.  Chris will also talk about blending boxes and patterns to cover multiple species and situations with fewer flies.

Saturday May 27th – Intro to Fly Fishing at Living Waters

9:30 A.M. — Introduction to Fly Casting
(Traditional and Tenkara)
We’ll be kicking things off with a casting class catered towards beginners. Join us for a clinic on the basic principles of fly casting. Casting traditional and tenkara fly rods will be demonstrated and discussed, with plenty of interactive learning opportunities!

11:00 A.M. — Basic Rigging for the Hill Country
(Traditional and Tenkara)
This presentation will explain the how’s and why’s behind rod, reel, and line selection for fly fishing our local waters. We’ll also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different fly line tapers, and show you the knots you need to get rigged up and ready to fish!

2:00 P.M. — Local Hot Spots – Llano River, San Gabriel River, Brushy Creek, and more!
Come find out where, how, and when to fish our local fishing hot spots. We will be giving a presentation on multiple hill country rivers and will discuss fishing techniques and flies according to each river. After this presentation you can consider yourself to be armed and dangerous from a local fly fishing standpoint! If you’re new to the area, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss!

4:00 P.M. — Fly Tying for Beginners
This class is designed to walk people through the essential basics of fly tying. We will walk each attendee through tying a couple basic fly patterns that fish well on our local water, as well as discussing the uses of the many fly tying tools out there! This is a great class for beginners as well that those who want to brush up on their fly tying and tool knowledge. If you already have a vise and tools, feel free to bring them! We do have a limited amount of loaner vises and tools as well.
